"For as long as I can remember, there have been horses.  My first babysitter was a horse.  Her name was Maude, she was a retired, ranch horse.  She was chesnut, smelled like burnt honey, and she is my first vivid memory ever.  My folks would put me up on her bareback, and whenever I would try to get down, she would simply move.  I was stuck up there and completely at the mercy of a clearly more intelligent being than myself.  I quickly learned that the swish of a tail meant she was irritated with me, and that if she gave me an ear she was paying attention to me.  I never forgot those first lessons taught to me by her.  She was patient, firm, and fair.  She gave me an introduction to her language and I have strived to increase my vocabulary since.  I did not know it at the time, but that one horse laid the foundation by which I relate to all horses to this day.
